The College of Professional Studies, in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Public Leadership at GW, is offering a Master of Professional Studies degree in Security and Safety Leadership (SSL). This part-time program is designed to meet the professional development needs of individuals who are involved in the public or private safety sectors in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and have experience in law enforcement, emergency management, corporate security, transportation security, fire service, public safety, public health preparedness, or the military.

The main objective of the Security and Safety Leadership program is to contribute to the professional development of safety professionals working in the DC-Metro area by analyzing a wide range of homeland security issues, policies, and practices. Students in this degree program will develop competencies and knowledge relating to:

  • Homeland Security strategy and policy development
  • Regional security issues
  • Emergency response
  • Inter-agency cooperation
  • Leadership and performance management
  • Managing organizational change
  • Intelligence and strategic analysis

This program is appropriate for professionals wishing to pursue a "Public Safety" Master's degree or "Homeland Security" Master's degree.

For those students wishing to pursue a shorter course of study and to focus on a specific area of security and safety leadership, we offer two graduate certificates within the program: Fundamentals of Strategic Security and Safety Leadership.

Students may apply to one graduate certificate only. However, qualified candidates can apply successfully completed graduate certificate credits towards the master’s degree.
