Philosophy
The rapidly changing social and organizational landscape is now global in nature and function. The premise of The George Washington University Organizational Sciences program is that, regardless of the industry, individuals and organizations must be ready to think and act quickly and effectively to maximize their outcomes. Our program focuses on preparing you to analyze and solve problems quickly by synthesizing information, rethinking work processes, enhancing member collaboration, sculpting organizational culture, integrating the interests of a diverse set of stakeholders, and steering organizations toward success. Pivotal to this success is an understanding of the interactive-systems and relationships between individuals, organizations, and the environment.
The Organizational Sciences program, founded in 1981, is part of The George Washington University (GW) Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. We have an interdisciplinary approach to the study of organizational effectiveness, drawing on the fields of organizational management, psychology, communication, economics, and statistics.
Organizational Sciences ties managerial and executive success to the integration of knowledge in three key areas: Strategy and Change Management, Leadership and Communication, and Performance and Talent Management. These interlocking knowledge components, when fused, create a knowledge base critical for individual and organizational success.
Conceptual Domain of Organizational Sciences
Organizational Sciences is built on the belief that students need to build a systems perspective, allowing them to:
- Formulate strategic initiatives
- Design interactive systems
- Implement planned change
- Manage internationally
- Develop effective teams
- Recruit, train, and retain talent
- Communicate internally and externally
- Implement transformational leadership
- Form decisions under uncertainty
- Negotiate and mediate
- Measure and assess performance
- Persuade with data
